THE HUMBLE BEGINNINGS OF MY BEAUTIFUL LIFE'S STORY
Rev. Dr. Jasmine R. Gordon’s life story can easily be compared to that of Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, King Saul’s grandson who was called from Lo Debar (a place of lack) by King David to the palace, (2 Samuel 9). What a beautiful journey! Well, Dr. Gordon recalls having to walk to school with no shoes on her feet as she travelled on the unpaved, stony dirt road every day to and from school. The distance was over one mile one way. Yet, she and her siblings happily went without complaining. Some days they made the journey twice because they had to go home for lunch for her parents could not afford lunch money. That is how “poor” her parents were. They had no high school diploma and were only “common laborers.” Yet, they were very wise in raising their children. Dr. Gordon is quick to share that they grew up poor but with values, skills and life lessons that cannot be purchased with money. They were taught four pillars which Dr. Gordon still embraces today, and they are [1] God, [2] Family, [3] Education, and [4] Community Service.
Church and school were the bedrocks and foundations of their upbringing. “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all other things will be added to you,” (Matthew 6:33). Dr. Gordon found this to be true in her own life from an early age. Her parents could not afford to send any of the children to high school. However, that did not prevent Dr. Gordon. She was always a high achiever and was determined to pursue her education. She got creative and acquired the books she needed and studied on her own against all odds. They had no electricity, so she had to use oil lamps at nights to study. During the daytime she tried to get as much study in as possible. Her hard work paid many dividends for she passed all her subjects. She worked as a pretrained teacher for two and a half years and saved as much as she could for college.
Dr. Jasmine Gordon graduated from Mico Teachers College and University with honors and went on to teach at a prestigious high school in Montego Bay, Mount Alvernia High School for nine years. During which time she pursued graduate education. She then moved on to Bethlehem Moravian Teachers College as a professor of education. She has a deep love and passion to serve the forgotten, downtrodden, and brokenhearted. Dr. Gordon spent her life serving humanity as a distinguished educator, counselor, coach, professional development specialist, and minister. Yet, she felt a deeper calling from God on her heart to do more. For many years she tried to fulfill that calling by becoming more involved in Christian ministries.
In 1991, Dr. Gordon relocated to Georgia in the United States where she continued her profession as a distinguished educator, national and local conference presenter, and professional development specialist. For her outstanding work she received numerous awards including The Atlanta Journal Constitution Honor Teacher Award, Atlanta City Council recognition, and featured educator on Public Broadcasting Atlanta. Here in the USA Dr. Gordon continued her education earning three master’s degrees in counseling psychology and human development, educational leadership, and divinity in Christian ministry. She also earned her Doctor of Education, and Doctor of Divinity (Hon). In addition, many certificates for various advance courses. Above all, Dr. Gordon emphasizes that she is a diligent student of humility and heavenly wisdom.
Dr. Gordon admitted that there was a higher calling on her life for God had expanded His purpose on her life. God called her to a ministry to heal broken hearts and restore them to wholeness, joy, and divine purpose in Christ. She herself experienced severe heartbreak and disappointment which took place in the church. She was not supported in my calling. Instead, she was denied and hindered in many ways by her very own pastor. This took her on a very long and lonesome journey of inner healing. In the end, her pastor could not undo what God had already done! God defended Dr. Gordon and protected His PURPOSE on her life.
In spring 2012, God gave her the name of the ministry “Soul Care Healing.” Spring of 2013, she entered seminary to further prepare myself for ministry. On February 9, 2013, the ministry was launched in her home as “Soul Care Healing Women’s Fellowship.” Dr. Gordon met once per month on Saturday mornings and led the women in Bible study, fellowship, praise, and worship. The ministry grew to include a chaplaincy ministry, an annual conference, workshops, trainings, and much more. Dr. Gordon receives numerous invitations to speak at churches and church conferences. January 2021, her first book was released “Especially Chosen to be Broken for Purpose: Overcoming Brokenness Growing into Wholeness and Purpose.” This book is a ministry of healing born from her own broken heart.
“True happiness, fulfillment, and inner peace is experienced when you know that you are operating in your God ordained PURPOSE.” Is your heart broken, feeling empty, and longing for something more? I came to Dr. Jasmine for mentoring because the person I wanted to be was not the person I was seeing in my everyday life. I was happy one day and unhappy the next. I did not realize that the thoughts I was feeding myself were causing harm and were not good for my self-esteem.
